BRAKE FLUID AIR BLEEDING [(E)]

BRAKE FLUID AIR BLEEDING [(E)]

 id041100815399

Oil and Chemical Type

Brake fluid type [Without Mazda M Hybrid]

Type: SAE J1703 or FMVSS116 DOT-3 or DOT-4
Brake fluid type [With Mazda M Hybrid]

Type: Mazda Genuine Brake Fluid or equivalent

Warning
•  Always end maintenance mode after performing the servicing in maintenance mode. Otherwise, driving the vehicle without ending maintenance mode could result in an accident.
Caution
•  Brake fluid will damage painted surfaces. Be careful not to spill any on painted surfaces. In addition, if there is any brake fluid on the wiring harness, the wire insulation may corrode causing a malfunction such as a short circuit. If brake fluid gets on a painted surface or wiring harness, wash and flush it off completely with water immediately.
•  Do not empty the brake fluid in the following brake related parts. Otherwise, the DSC HU/CM (without Mazda M Hybrid)/electronically controlled brake unit (with Mazda M Hybrid) could be damaged.
―  DSC HU/CM (without Mazda M Hybrid)/electronically controlled brake unit (with Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Brake fluid reserve tank
―  Rear brake caliper
•  A new rear brake caliper has been plugged sealing off the brake fluid. For this reason, remove the plug of the rear brake caliper directly before installing the rear brake caliper to the vehicle. Other than for this, do not remove the plug of the rear brake caliper.
•  When disconnecting the brake hose from the rear brake caliper, always plug and seal the rear brake caliper so that brake fluid does not leak.
Note
•  Keep the fluid level in the brake fluid reserve tank at 3/4 full or more during the air bleeding.
•  Bleed the air from the brake caliper that is the nearest to the master cylinder.
•  When switching to maintenance mode, the electronically controlled brake unit and the electric parking brake functions are canceled.
•  When switching to maintenance mode, the clearance between the rear disc pad and the rear disc plate widens.
•  When the maintenance mode is ended, the electric parking brake motor gear unit operating time is longer than normal due to the automatic adjustment of the electric parking brake.
•  Bleed the air inside the brake fluid reserve tank when the fluid inside the brake fluid reserve tank is empty. (with Mazda M Hybrid) (See ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [R.H.D.].) (See ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L.H.D.].)

Brake fluid type

SAE J1703 or FMVSS116 DOT-3 or DOT-4 (Without Mazda M Hybrid)
Mazda Genuine Brake Fluid or equivalent (With Mazda M Hybrid)

Without Mazda M Hybrid

1.  Switch the ignition ON (engine off).

2.  Release the electric parking brake.

3.  Switch the ignition OFF while pressing the electric parking brake switch.

4.  Remove the cap from the brake fluid reserved tank and add brake fluid.

5.  Remove the bleeder cap on the brake caliper, and attach a vinyl tube to the bleeder screw.

6.  Place the other end of the vinyl tube in a clear container and fill the container with fluid during air bleeding.

Note
•  Air bleeding from the brake pipe can be implemented quickly by slowly depressing the brake pedal.

7.  Working with two people, one should pump the brake pedal strongly and quickly several times, and then depress and hold the pedal down.

8.  While one technician depresses the brake pedal and another technician loosens the bleeder screw using a box-end wrench, drain any fluid containing air bubbles, and then retighten the bleeder screw.

9.  Repeat Steps 7 and 8 until no air bubbles are seen.

10.  Perform air bleeding as described in the above procedures for all brake calipers.

Note
•  If the air bleed from the left/right rear calipers is insufficient, air bleeding can implemented quickly by operating/releasing the electric parking brake several times while performing the work in Steps 7 and 8.

11.  Clean the brake calipers.

12.  After air bleeding, inspect the following:

•  Brake operation
•  Fluid leakage
•  Fluid level

With Mazda M Hybrid

Caution
•  When performing the procedure while the vehicle is on the ground, block the front and rear wheels using wheel blocks. Otherwise, the electric parking brake may be released and the vehicle may move when switching to maintenance mode.

1.  Switch to the maintenance mode. (See MAINTENANCE MODE [(E)].)

2.  Remove the wheel and tire. (See WHEEL AND TIRE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

3.  Remove the cap from the brake fluid reserved tank and add brake fluid.

4.  Perform air bleeding in the following order. (See Brake fluid air bleeding note)

(1)  Front part on driver’s side
(2)  Front part on passenger's side
(3)  Rear part on driver's side
(4)  Rear part on passenger's side

5.  End the maintenance mode. (See MAINTENANCE MODE [(E)].)

6.  After air bleeding, inspect the following:

•  Brake operation
•  Fluid leakage
•  Fluid level
