ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-X 2.0]

Warning
•  A hot engine can cause severe burns. Turn off the engine and wait until it is cool before inspecting the electric variable valve timing actuator.
Caution
•  Do not disassemble the electric variable valve timing actuator because it is a precision unit.

1.  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].)

2.  Remove the engine cover. (See ENGINE COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-X 2.0].)

Note
•  When inspecting the exhaust electric variable valve timing motor/driver, it is not necessary to remove the intake electric variable valve timing motor/driver.

3.  Remove the intake electric variable valve timing motor/driver or the exhaust electric variable valve timing motor/driver. (See ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING MOTOR/DRIVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-X 2.0].)

4.  Rotate the eccentric shaft of the electric variable valve timing actuator to the left and right to verify that the shaft rotates smoothly.

•  If the eccentric shaft does not rotate smoothly, replace the electric variable valve timing actuator. (See ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-X 2.0].)
Note
•  Place your finger in the joint groove of the eccentric shaft so that the eccentric shaft can be rotated easily.
•  If the eccentric shaft is rotated continuously counterclockwise when viewed from the front, it will stop rotating at the maximum retard position, and if it is rotated continuously clockwise, it will stop rotating at the maximum advance position.
•  The eccentric shaft rotates as follows from the maximum retard position to the maximum advance position.
•  Intake side: 13.1 rotations (MAZDA part number: HF01-124X0)
•  Intake side: 10.4 rotations (MAZDA part number: HF02-124X0)
•  Exhaust side: 8.3 rotations

5.  Install in the reverse order of removal.
