Caution
•  Perform the following malfunction diagnosis only when it is diagnosed with a short to ground by CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN) MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW.

Determination Procedure

Caution
•  When disconnecting the connector, verify that there is no looseness, damage, deformation, corrosion, or poor connection of the connector terminals.
•  When inspecting the connector, touch it with a paper clip or similar thin pin without directly inserting a tester probe into the terminal.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) AND CONNECTOR C-40/C-41
•  Switch the ignition off.
•  Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
•  Disconnect the connector C-40 (L.H.D.).
•  Disconnect the connector C-41 (R.H.D.).
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 3.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the connector 3 which has body control module (BCM) terminals 3X and 3W.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
•  Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-40 and body control module (BCM) because the wiring harness is shorted to ground (L.H.D.).
•  Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-41 and body control module (BCM) because the wiring harness is shorted to ground (R.H.D.).
No
Replace the body control module (BCM) because there is a short to ground in the body control module (BCM).

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN EPS CONTROL MODULE AND CONNECTOR C-40/C-41
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between EPS control module terminal 2C and body ground
―  Between EPS control module terminal 2A and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 5.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN EPS CONTROL MODULE FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the EPS control module connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between EPS control module terminal 2C (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between EPS control module terminal 2A (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
•  Repair or replace the wiring harness between the EPS control module and connector C-40 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground (L.H.D.).
•  Repair or replace the wiring harness between the EPS control module and connector C-41 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground (R.H.D.).
No
Replace the EPS control module because there is a short to ground in the EPS control module.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN AUTO LEVELING CONTROL MODULE / ADAPTIVE LED HEADLIGHTS CONTROL MODULE AND CONNECTOR C-40/C-41
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between auto leveling control module / adaptive LED headlights control module terminal E and body ground
―  Between auto leveling control module / adaptive LED headlights control module terminal H and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 7.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN AUTO LEVELING CONTROL MODULE / ADAPTIVE LED HEADLIGHTS CONTROL MODULE FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the auto leveling control module / adaptive LED headlights control module connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between auto leveling control module / adaptive LED headlights control module terminal E (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between auto leveling control module / adaptive LED headlights control module terminal H (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
•  Repair or replace the wiring harness between the auto leveling control module / adaptive LED headlights control module and connector C-40 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground (L.H.D.).
•  Repair or replace the wiring harness between the auto leveling control module / adaptive LED headlights control module and connector C-41 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground (R.H.D.).
No
Replace the auto leveling control module / adaptive LED headlights control module because there is a short to ground in the auto leveling control module / adaptive LED headlights control module.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-40/C-41 AND CONNECTOR C-13
•  Connect the connector C-40 (L.H.D.).
•  Connect the connector C-41 (R.H.D.).
•  Disconnect the connector C-13.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
•  Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-40 and connector C-13 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground (L.H.D.).
•  Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-41 and connector C-13 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground (R.H.D.).
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-13 AND CONNECTOR C-21
•  Connect the connector C-13.
•  Disconnect the connector C-21.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-13 and connector C-21 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN SAS CONTROL MODULE AND CONNECTOR C-21
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between SAS control module terminal 3A and body ground
―  Between SAS control module terminal 3D and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 13.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-21 AND CONNECTORS C-55, C-56
•  Disconnect the connectors C-55, C-56.
•  Connect the connector C-21.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-21 and connectors C-55, C-56 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN SAS CONTROL MODULE AND CONNECTORS C-55, C-56
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between SAS control module terminal 3A and body ground
―  Between SAS control module terminal 3D and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connectors C-55, C-56 and connector C-21 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN SAS CONTROL MODULE FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the SAS control module connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between SAS control module terminal 3A (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between SAS control module terminal 3D (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the SAS control module and connectors C-55, C-56 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the SAS control module because there is a short to ground in the SAS control module.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-21 AND CONNECTOR C-07
•  Connect the connector C-21.
•  Disconnect the connector C-07.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-21 and connector C-07 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
•  Go to the next step. (SKYACTIV-D (ATX)) (with connectors C-37, C-36)
•  Go to Step 20. (SKYACTIV-D (ATX)) (without connectors C-37, C-36)
•  Go to Step 24. (SKYACTIV-G or SKYACTIV-X or SKYACTIV-D (MTX)) (with connectors C-37, C-36)
•  Go to Step 28. (SKYACTIV-G or SKYACTIV-X or SKYACTIV-D (MTX)) (without connectors C-37, C-36)

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN TCM AND CONNECTOR C-07 / CONNECTORS C-37, C-36
•  Disconnect the connectors C-37, C-36.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between TCM terminal E and body ground
―  Between TCM terminal F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to Step 17.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND CONNECTOR C-07 / CONNECTORS C-37, C-36
•  Disconnect the connector C-02.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between TCM terminal E and body ground
―  Between TCM terminal F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-02 and connector C-07 / connectors C-37, C-36 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN TCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the TCM.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between TCM terminal E (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between TCM terminal F (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the TCM and connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the TCM because there is a short to ground in the TCM.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN DSC HU/CM / ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT AND CONNECTORS C-37, C-36
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal L and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal J and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AM and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AO and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 19.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN DSC HU/CM / ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNITFOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal L (wiring harness side) and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal J (wiring harness side) and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AM (wiring harness side) and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AO (wiring harness side) and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit and connectors C-37, C-36 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unitbecause there is a short to ground in the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN PCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the PCM connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between PCM terminal 2AK (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between PCM terminal 2AL (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PCM and connectors C-37, C-36 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the PCM because there is a short to ground in the PCM.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND TCM
•  Disconnect the connector C-02.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between TCM terminal E and body ground
―  Between TCM terminal F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to Step 22.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN TCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the TCM.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between TCM terminal E (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between TCM terminal F (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the TCM and connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the TCM because there is a short to ground in the TCM.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN DSC HU/CM / ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal L (wiring harness side) and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal J (wiring harness side) and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AM (wiring harness side) and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AO (wiring harness side) and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit because there is a short to ground in the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN PCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the PCM connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between PCM terminal 2AK (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between PCM terminal 2AL (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PCM and connector C-07 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the PCM because there is a short to ground in the PCM.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-07 AND CONNECTORS C-37, C-36
•  Connect the connector C-07.
•  Disconnect the connectors C-37, C-36.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-07 and connectors C-37, C-36 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN DSC HU/CM / ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT AND CONNECTORS C-37, C-36
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal L and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal J and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AM and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AO and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 27.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN DSC HU/CM / ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal L (wiring harness side) and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal J (wiring harness side) and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AM (wiring harness side) and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AO (wiring harness side) and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit and connectors C-37, C-36 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit because there is a short to ground in the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTORS C-37, C-36 AND CONNECTOR C-02
•  Connect the connectors C-37, C-36.
•  Disconnect the connector C-02.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connectors C-37, C-36 and connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
•  Go to Step 30. (SKYACTIV-G or SKYACTIV-X (ATX))
•  Go to Step 34. (SKYACTIV-G or SKYACTIV-X (MTX), SKYACTIV-D (MTX))

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN DSC HU/CM / ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT AND CONNECTOR C-07 / CONNECTOR C-02
•  Disconnect the connector C-02.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal L and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal J and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AM and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AO and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
•  Go to Step 30. (SKYACTIV-G or SKYACTIV-X (ATX))
•  Go to Step 34. (SKYACTIV-G or SKYACTIV-X (MTX), SKYACTIV-D (MTX))

INSPECT CAN LINE IN DSC HU/CM / ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal L (wiring harness side) and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal J (wiring harness side) and body ground (without Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AM (wiring harness side) and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1AO (wiring harness side) and body ground (with Mazda M Hybrid)
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit and connector C-07 / connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit because there is a short to ground in the DSC HU/CM / electronically controlled brake unit.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND CONNECTOR C-38
•  Connect the connector C-02.
•  Disconnect the connector C-38.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-02 and connector C-38 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN TCM AND CONNECTOR C-38
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between TCM terminal E and body ground
―  Between TCM terminal F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 33.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN TCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the TCM connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between TCM terminal E (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between TCM terminal F (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the TCM and connector C-38 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the TCM because there is a short to ground in the TCM.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-38 AND CONNECTOR C-01
•  Connect the connector C-38.
•  Disconnect the connector C-01.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-38 and connector C-01 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to Step 35.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND CONNECTOR C-01
•  Connect the connector C-02.
•  Disconnect the connector C-01.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3X and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 3W and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-02 and connector C-01 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN PCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the PCM connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between PCM terminal 2S (wiring harness side) and body ground (SKYACTIV-G or SKYACTIV-X)
―  Between PCM terminal 2T (wiring harness side) and body ground (SKYACTIV-G or SKYACTIV-X)
―  Between PCM terminal 2AK (wiring harness side) and body ground (SKYACTIV-D)
―  Between PCM terminal 2AL (wiring harness side) and body ground (SKYACTIV-D)
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PCM and connector C-01 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the PCM because there is a short to ground in the PCM.
