DETERMINING SHORT TO GROUND LOCATION (CAN-BUS No.2) [(E)]

Caution
•  Perform the following malfunction diagnosis only when it is diagnosed with a short to ground by CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN) MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW.

Determination Procedure (With Mazda M Hybrid or SKYACTIV-D or SKYACTIV-X)

Caution
•  When disconnecting the connector, verify that there is no looseness, damage, deformation, corrosion, or poor connection of the connector terminals.
•  When inspecting the connector, touch it with a paper clip or similar thin pin without directly inserting a tester probe into the terminal.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Switch the ignition off.
•  Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
•  Disconnect the connector 2 which has body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the body control module (BCM) because there is a short to ground in the body control module (BCM).

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) AND CONNECTOR C-09
•  Disconnect the connector C-09.
•  Connect the connector 2 which has body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the body control module (BCM) and connector C-09 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-53 AND CONNECTOR C-09
•  Disconnect the connector C-53.
•  Connect the connector C-09.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-53 and connector C-09 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN PM SENSOR AND CONNECTOR C-53
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between PM sensor terminal B and body ground
―  Between PM sensor terminal C and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 6.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN PM SENSOR FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the PM sensor connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between PM sensor terminal B (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between PM sensor terminal C (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PM sensor and connector C-53 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the PM sensor because there is a short to ground in the PM sensor.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN NOx SENSOR AND CONNECTOR C-53
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between NOx sensor terminal B and body ground
―  Between NOx sensor terminal C and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 8.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN NOx SENSOR FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the NOx sensor connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between NOx sensor terminal B (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between NOx sensor terminal C (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the NOx sensor and connector C-53 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the NOx sensor because there is a short to ground in the NOx sensor.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN Mazda M Hybrid BATTERY AND CONNECTOR C-53
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between Mazda M Hybrid battery terminal 1B and body ground
―  Between Mazda M Hybrid battery terminal 1E and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 10.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN Mazda M Hybrid BATTERY FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the Mazda M Hybrid battery connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between Mazda M Hybrid battery terminal 1B (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between Mazda M Hybrid battery terminal 1E (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the Mazda M Hybrid battery and connector C-53 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the Mazda M Hybrid battery because there is a short to ground in the Mazda M Hybrid battery.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-08 AND CONNECTOR C-53
•  Disconnect the connector C-08.
•  Connect the connector C-53.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-08 and connector C-53 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
•  Go to the next step. (L.H.D.)
•  Go to Step 15. (R.H.D.)

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTORS C-35, C-34 AND CONNECTOR C-08
•  Disconnect the connectors C-35, C-34.
•  Connect the connector C-08.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connectors C-35, C-34 and connector C-08 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT AND CONNECTORS C-35, C-34
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1D and body ground
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 14.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the electronically controlled brake unit connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1D (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between electronically controlled brake unit terminal 1F (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the electronically controlled brake unit and connectors C-35, C-34 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the electronically controlled brake unit because there is a short to ground in the electronically controlled brake unit.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-31 AND CONNECTORS C-35, C-34
•  Disconnect the connector C-31.
•  Connect the connectors C-35, C-34.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between connector C-31 and connectors C-35, C-34 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to Step 17.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-08 AND CONNECTOR C-31
•  Disconnect the connector C-31.
•  Connect the connector C-08.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 17.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the electronically controlled brake unit connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-08 and connector C-31 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the electronically controlled brake unit because there is a short to ground in the electronically controlled brake unit.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN DC-DC CONVERTER (Mazda M Hybrid) AND CONNECTOR C-31
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) terminal 1C and body ground
―  Between DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) terminal 1D and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 19.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN DC-DC CONVERTER (Mazda M Hybrid) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) terminal 1C (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) terminal 1D (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) and connector C-31 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) because there is a short to ground in the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid).

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND CONNECTOR C-31
•  Disconnect the connector C-02.
•  Connect the connector C-31.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-02 and connector C-31 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND CONNECTOR C-01
•  Disconnect the connector C-01.
•  Connect the connector C-02.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
•  Go to Step 22.(SKYACTIV-G or SKYACTIV-X)
•  Go to Step 23.(SKYACTIV-D)

INSPECT CAN LINE IN INTEGRATED STARTER GENERATOR (ISG) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the integrated starter generator (ISG) connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-02 and connector C-01 / integrated starter generator (ISG) because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the integrated starter generator (ISG) because there is a short to ground in the integrated starter generator (ISG).

INSPECT CAN LINE IN PCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the PCM connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between PCM terminal 2M (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between PCM terminal 2N (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PCM and connector C-01 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the PCM because there is a short to ground in the PCM.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND CONNECTOR C-01
•  Disconnect the connector C-02.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between PCM terminal 1AI and body ground
―  Between PCM terminal 1AN and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-01 and connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN PCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the PCM connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between PCM terminal 1AI (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between PCM terminal 1AN (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PCM and connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the PCM because there is a short to ground in the PCM.


Determination Procedure (Without Mazda M Hybrid and SKYACTIV-G)

Caution
•  When disconnecting the connector, verify that there is no looseness, damage, deformation, corrosion, or poor connection of the connector terminals.

Yes
•  Go to the next step. (R.H.D.)
•  Go to Step 6. (L.H.D.)
No
Replace the body control module (BCM) because there is a short to ground in the body control module (BCM).

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTORS C-35, C-34 AND BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)
•  Disconnect the connectors C-35, C-34.
•  Connect the connector 2 which has body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2H and body ground
―  Between body control module (BCM) terminal 2F and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connectors C-35, C-34 and body control module (BCM) because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN DSC HU/ CM AND CONNECTORS C-35, C-34
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal AQ and body ground
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal AN and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 5.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN DSC HU/CM FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the DSC HU/CM connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal AQ (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal AN (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DSC HU/CM and connectors C-35, C-34 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the DSC HU/CM because there is a short to ground in the DSC HU/CM.

INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GROUND BETWEEN CONNECTORS C-35, C-34 AND PCM
•  Disconnect the PCM connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between PCM terminal 2M (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between PCM terminal 2N (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Replace the PCM because there is a short to ground in the PCM.
No
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PCM and connectors C-35, C-34 because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN DSC HU/CM FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the DSC HU/CM connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal AQ (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between DSC HU/CM terminal AN (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the DSC HU/CM because there is a short to ground in the DSC HU/CM.

INSPECT CAN LINE IN PCM FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the PCM connector.
•  Inspect for continuity at the following terminals:
―  Between PCM terminal 2M (wiring harness side) and body ground
―  Between PCM terminal 2N (wiring harness side) and body ground
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DSC HU/CM and body control module (BCM) / PCM because the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
No
Replace the PCM because there is a short to ground in the PCM.
