Determination Procedure (With Mazda M Hybrid or SKYACTIV-D or SKYACTIV-X)

Caution

•  When disconnecting the connector, verify that there is no looseness, damage, deformation, corrosion, or poor connection of the connector terminals.

•  When inspecting the connector, touch it with a paper clip or similar thin pin without directly inserting a tester probe into the terminal.

•  Disconnect the negative battery terminal before performing any work that requires handling of connectors.

Step	Inspection		Action
1	INSPECT BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the connector 2 which has body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F (wiring harness side). •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F (wiring harness side) the same?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Replace the body control module (BCM) because there is a short between circuits in the body control module (BCM). (See BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
2	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-09 AND BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the connector C-09. •  Connect the connector 2 which has body control module (BCM) terminals 2E and 2G. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the body control module (BCM) and connector C-09 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Go to the next step.
3	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-53 AND CONNECTOR C-09 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the connector C-53. •  Connect the connector C-09. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between connector C-53 and connector C-09 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Go to the next step.
4	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN PM SENSOR AND CONNECTOR C-53 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Inspect for continuity between PM sensor terminals B and C. •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Go to Step 6.
5	INSPECT PM SENSOR FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Disconnect the PM sensor connector. •  Inspect for continuity between PM sensor terminals B and C (wiring harness side). •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PM sensor and connector C-53 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the PM sensor because there is a short between circuits in the PM sensor. (See PM SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-D 1.8].)
6	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN NOx SENSOR AND CONNECTOR C-53 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Inspect for continuity between NOx sensor terminals B and C. •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Go to Step 8.
7	INSPECT NOx SENSOR FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Disconnect the NOx sensor connector. •  Inspect for continuity between NOx sensor terminals B and C (wiring harness side). •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the NOx sensor and connector C-53 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the NOx sensor because there is a short between circuits in the NOx sensor. (See NOx SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-D 1.8].)
8	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN Mazda M Hybrid BATTERY AND CONNECTOR C-53 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Inspect for continuity between Mazda M Hybrid battery terminals 1B and 1E. •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Go to Step 10.
9	INSPECT Mazda M Hybrid BATTERY FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Disconnect the Mazda M Hybrid battery connector. •  Inspect for continuity between Mazda M Hybrid battery terminals 1B and 1E (wiring harness side). •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the Mazda M Hybrid battery and connector C-53 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the Mazda M Hybrid battery because there is a short between circuits in the Mazda M Hybrid battery. (See Mazda M Hybrid BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
10	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-08 AND CONNECTOR C-53 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Disconnect the connector C-08. •  Connect the connector C-53. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between connector C-08 and connector C-53 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	•  Go to the next step. (L.H.D.) •  Go to Step 15. (R.H.D.)
11	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN CONNECTORS C-35, C-34 AND CONNECTOR C-08 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the connectors C-35, C-34. •  Connect the connector C-08. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between connectors C-35, C-34 and connector C-08 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Go to the next step.
12	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT AND CONNECTORS C-35, C-34 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Inspect for continuity between electronically controlled brake unit terminals 1D and 1F. •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Go to Step 14.
13	INSPECT ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Disconnect the electronically controlled brake unit connector. •  Inspect for continuity between electronically controlled brake unit terminals 1D and 1F (wiring harness side). •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the electronically controlled brake unit and connectors C-35, C-34 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the electronically controlled brake unit because there is a short between circuits in the electronically controlled brake unit. (See ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L.H.D.].)
14	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-31 AND CONNECTORS C-35, C-34 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Disconnect the connector C-31. •  Connect the connectors C-35, C-34. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between connector C-31 and connectors C-35, C-34 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Go to Step 17.
15	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-08 AND CONNECTOR C-31 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the connector C-31. •  Connect the connector C-08. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Go to Step 17.
16	INSPECT ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the electronically controlled brake unit connector. •  Inspect for continuity between electronically controlled brake unit terminals 1D and 1F (wiring harness side). •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the electronically controlled brake unit and connector C-08 / connector C-31 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the electronically controlled brake unit because there is a short between circuits in the electronically controlled brake unit. (See ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [R.H.D.].)
17	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN DC-DC CONVERTER (Mazda M Hybrid) AND CONNECTOR C-31 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Inspect for continuity between DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) terminals 1C and 1D. •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Go to Step 19.
18	INSPECT DC-DC CONVERTER (Mazda M Hybrid) FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Disconnect the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) connector. •  Inspect for continuity between DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) terminals 1C and 1D (wiring harness side). •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) and connector C-31 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) because there is a short between circuits in the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid). (See DC-DC CONVERTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-D 1.8].)
19	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND CONNECTOR C-31 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Disconnect the connector C-02. •  Connect the connector C-31. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between connector C-02 and connector C-31 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Go to the next step.
20	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND CONNECTOR C-01 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the connector C-01. •  Connect the connector C-02. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	•  Go to Step 22.(SKYACTIV-G or SKYACTIV-X) •  Go to Step 23.(SKYACTIV-D)
21	INSPECT INTEGRATED STARTER GENERATOR (ISG) FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the integrated starter generator (ISG) connector. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the connector C-02 and connector C-01 / integrated starter generator (ISG) because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the integrated starter generator (ISG) because there is a short between circuits in the integrated starter generator (ISG). (See INTEGRATED STARTER GENERATOR (ISG) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (E)].)
22	INSPECT PCM FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the PCM connector. •  Connect the connector C-01. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PCM and connector C-01 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the PCM because there is a short between circuits in the PCM. (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (WITH CYLINDER DEACTIVATION (E))].) (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-X 2.0].)
23	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN CONNECTOR C-02 AND PCM FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the connector C-02. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at PCM terminals 1AI and 1AN. •  Is the voltage at PCM terminals 1AI and 1AN the same?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Repair or replace the wiring harness between connector C-01 and connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
24	INSPECT PCM FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the PCM connector. •  Connect the connector C-01. •  Connect the connector C-02. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the PCM and connector C-02 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the PCM because there is a short between circuits in the PCM. (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-D 1.8].)

Determination Procedure (Without Mazda M Hybrid and SKYACTIV-G)

Caution

•  When disconnecting the connector, verify that there is no looseness, damage, deformation, corrosion, or poor connection of the connector terminals.

•  When inspecting the connector, touch it with a paper clip or similar thin pin without directly inserting a tester probe into the terminal.

•  Disconnect the negative battery terminal before performing any work that requires handling of connectors.

1	INSPECT BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the connector 2 which has body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F (wiring harness side). •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F (wiring harness side) the same?	Yes	•  Go to the next step. (R.H.D.) •  Go to Step 6. (L.H.D.)
		No	Replace the body control module (BCM) because there is a short between circuits in the body control module (BCM). (See BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
2	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN CONNECTORS C-35, C-34 AND BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the connectors C-35, C-34. •  Connect the connector 2 which has body control module (BCM) terminals 2E and 2G. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Measure the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F. •  Is the voltage at body control module (BCM) terminals 2H and 2F the same?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the body control module (BCM) and connectors C-35, C-34 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Go to the next step.
3	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN DSC HU/CM AND CONNECTORS C-35, C-34 FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Inspect for continuity between DSC HU/CM terminals 1D and 1F. •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Go to Step 5.
4	INSPECT DSC HU/CM FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Disconnect the DSC HU/CM connector. •  Inspect for continuity between DSC HU/CM terminals AQ and AN (wiring harness side). •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between the DSC HU/CM and connectors C-35, C-34 because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the DSC HU/CM because there is a short between circuits in the DSC HU/CM. (See DSC HU/CM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [R.H.D.].)
5	INSPECT CAN LINE BETWEEN CONNECTORS C-35 C-34 AND PCM FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Disconnect the PCM connector. •  Connect the connectors C-35, C-34. •  Connect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Switch the ignition ON (engine off). •  Inspect for continuity between PCM terminals 2M and 2N (wiring harness side). •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between connectors C-35, C-34 and PCM because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the PCM because there is a short between circuits in the PCM. (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (WITH CYLINDER DEACTIVATION (E))].)
6	INSPECT DSC HU/CM FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Switch the ignition off. •  Disconnect the negative battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].) •  Disconnect the DSC HU/CM connector. •  Inspect for continuity between DSC HU/CM terminals AQ and AN (wiring harness side). •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Replace the DSC HU/CM because there is a short between circuits in the DSC HU/CM. (See DSC HU/CM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L.H.D. (E)].)
6	INSPECT PCM FOR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS •  Disconnect the PCM connector. •  Inspect for continuity between PCM terminals 2M and 2N (wiring harness side). •  Is there continuity?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness between DSC HU/CM and body control module (BCM) / PCM because the wiring harness is shorted between circuits.
		No	Replace the PCM because there is a short between circuits in the PCM. (See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (WITH CYLINDER DEACTIVATION (E))].)
