AIR BAG MODULE AND PRE-TENSIONER SEAT BELT DEPLOYMENT PROCEDURES [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM]

Warning
•  Never dispose of an air bag module or pre-tensioner seat belt that has not been operated (deployed). Otherwise, they may accidently operate (deploy) and cause serious injury.
Caution
•  When disposing of any air bag modules or pre-tensioner seat belts, activate (deploy) them by following the deployment procedures below.
•  To dispose of an activated (deployed) air bag module or pre-tensioner seat belt, refer to [AIR BAG MODULE AND PRE-TENSIONER SEAT BELT DISPOSAL PROCEDURES]. (See AIR BAG MODULE AND PRE-TENSIONER SEAT BELT DISPOSAL PROCEDURES [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)
Note
•  The air bag module, the pre-tensioner seat belt, and the connector part of the processing wiring harness are melted by high heat when the inflator is activated (deployed).
•  The SRS air bag system can be identified by whether or not the seat track position sensor is present.
―  Standard deployment control system: Without seat track position sensor
―  Two-step deployment control system: With seat track position sensor

Preparation Before Servicing

1.  Switch the ignition off.

2.  Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait for 1 min or more. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].)

3.  Cut the location of the repair part [BCKA-67SH2] as shown in the figure and remove the vinyl tube.

4.  Check the rib shape of the connector and select a wiring harness that matches the inflator.

5.  Connect the wiring harness selected in Step 4 to a wire that meets all of the following requirements. (See REPAIR CONNECTOR REPLACEMENT/WIRING HARNESS CONNECTION.)

•  Conductor cross sectional area 0.5 mm2{0.0008 in2}} or more (conductor diameter 0.85 mm {0.033 in})
•  Length 6 m {19 ft} or more

Warning
•  When connecting the processing harness to the inflator, the inflator may unexpectedly activate (deploy) due to static electricity and cause injury. Before connecting the processing wiring harness to the inflator, peel off the end coating of the wires and short-circuit them by twisting them.

6.  Before connecting to the inflator, peel off the end coating of the wires and short-circuit them by twisting them to prevent accidental explosion due to static electricity.

7.  Activate (deploy) the relevant air bag module or pre-tensioner seat belt.

Activation (deployment) inside the vehicle
•  Driver-side air bag module (See Driver-side Air Bag Module.)
•  Passenger-side air bag module (See Passenger-side Air Bag Module.)
•  Knee air bag module (See Knee air bag module.)
•  Side air bag module (See Side Air Bag Module.)

Activation (deployment) outside the vehicle
•  Driver-side air bag module (See Driver-side Air Bag Module.)
•  Passenger-side air bag module (See Passenger-side Air Bag Module.)

Activation (Deployment) Inside The Vehicle


Driver-side Air Bag Module

1.  Remove the driver-side air bag module. (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)

2.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the driver-side air bag module.

3.  Install the driver-side air bag module. (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)

4.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

5.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

6.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Warning
•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Passenger-side Air Bag Module

1.  Remove the glove compartment. (See GLOVE COMPARTMENT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

3.  Disconnect the connectors.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the passenger-side air bag module.

5.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

6.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

7.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Warning
•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Knee air bag module

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Driver-side front scuff plate (See FRONT SCUFF PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(2)  Driver-side front side trim (See FRONT SIDE TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Driver-side decoration panel (See DECORATION PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  Passenger-side decoration panel (See DECORATION PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(5)  Driver-side lower panel (See LOWER PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(6)  Knee air bag module (See KNEE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)

2.  Remove the knee air bag module from the air bag case.

3.  Remove the clip.

4.  Remove the nuts.

5.  Remove the cover.

6.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

7.  Disconnect the connector.

8.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the knee air bag module.

9.  Install the cover.

10.  Install the nuts.

11.  Install the knee air bag module. (See KNEE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)

12.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

13.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

14.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Warning
•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Side Air Bag Module

1.  Remove the front seat. (See FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

2.  Remove the front seat back trim and seat back pad. (See FRONT SEAT BACK TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

3.  Remove the side air bag module. (See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)

4.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

5.  Disconnect the connector.

6.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the side air bag module.

7.  Install the side air bag module. (See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)

8.  Install the front seat. (See FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

9.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

10.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

11.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Warning
•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Curtain Air Bag Module

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Front map light (See FRONT MAP LIGHT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(2)  Sunvisor (See SUNVISOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Assist handle (See ASSIST HANDLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  A-pillar trim (See A-PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(5)  Front seat belt lower anchor (See FRONT SEAT BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(6)  B-pillar upper trim (See B-PILLAR UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(7)  Trunk side upper trim (See TRUNK SIDE UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(8)  C-pillar trim (See C-PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Peel back the headliner.

3.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

4.  Disconnect the connector.

5.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the curtain air bag module.

6.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

7.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

8.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Warning
•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Front pre-tensioner seat belt

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  B-pillar upper trim (See B-PILLAR UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(2)  Front scuff plate (See FRONT SCUFF PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Rear scuff plate (See REAR SCUFF PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  B-pillar lower trim (See B-PILLAR LOWER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Using a flathead screwdriver, pry out the connector stopper plate.

3.  Disconnect the connectors.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the front pre-tensioner seat belt.

5.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

6.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

7.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Warning
•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Rear pre-tensioner seat belt

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Rear package tray (See REAR PACKAGE TRAY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(2)  Trunk covering (See TRUNK COVERING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Trunk board (See TRUNK BOARD REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(4)  Trunk end trim (See TRUNK END TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(5)  Trunk side upper trim (See TRUNK SIDE UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(6)  C-pillar trim (See C-PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(7)  Rear seat cushion (See REAR SEAT CUSHION REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Using a flathead screwdriver, pry out the connector stopper plate.

3.  Disconnect the connector.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the rear pre-tensioner seat belt.

5.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

6.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

7.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Warning
•  The rear pre-tensioner seat belt is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Activation (Deployment) Outside The Vehicle


Driver-side Air Bag Module

1.  Remove the driver-side air bag module. (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)

2.  Wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) three times in the position shown in the figure on the driver-side air bag module.

3.  Wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) four times in the position shown in the figure on the driver-side air bag module.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the driver-side air bag module.

Warning
•  If the air bag module is not securely fastened to the wheel, the tire may fall due to impact and cause injury during activation (deployment). The air bag module is securely fixed to the wheel with the pad side up.

5.  With the pad side of the driver-side air bag module facing up, place it in the center of the wheel, and wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) four times to secure it.

6.  Stack three tires without wheels on top of the tire with the driver-side air bag module, and stack another tire with a wheel on the very top.

7.  Secure the tire with the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more).

8.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the tires.

9.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

10.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Passenger-side Air Bag Module

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Glove compartment (See GLOVE COMPARTMENT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(2)  Passenger-side front heat duct No.2 (See FRONT HEAT DUCT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

2.  Remove the passenger-side air bag module. (See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)

3.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the passenger-side air bag module.

Warning
•  If the air bag module is not securely fastened to the tire, the tire may fall due to impact and cause injury during activation (deployment). The air bag module is securely fixed to the tire with the pad facing the center of the tire.

4.  With the pad surface of the passenger-side air bag module facing the center of the tire, wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section of 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) four times to secure it.

5.  Place two tires without wheels on top of each other, place a tire with the passenger-side air bag module fixed, place another tire without a wheel on top of it, and place another tire with a wheel on top.

6.  Secure the tire with the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more).

7.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the tires.

8.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

9.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Knee air bag module

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Driver-side front scuff plate (See FRONT SCUFF PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(2)  Driver-side front side trim (See FRONT SIDE TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Driver-side decoration panel (See DECORATION PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  Passenger-side decoration panel (See DECORATION PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(5)  Driver-side lower panel (See LOWER PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(6)  Knee air bag module (See KNEE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)

2.  Remove the knee air bag module from the air bag case.

3.  Remove the clip.

4.  Remove the nuts.

8.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the knee air bag module.

12.  Place two tires without wheels on top of each other, place a tire with the knee air bag module fixed, place another tire without a wheel on top of it, and place another tire with a wheel on top.

13.  Secure the tire with the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more).

14.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the tires.

15.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

16.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.

17.  Discard the air bag module. (See AIR BAG MODULE AND PRE-TENSIONER SEAT BELT DISPOSAL PROCEDURES [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)


Side Air Bag Module

1.  Perform the following procedure. (without Mazda M Hybrid)

(1)  Switch the ignition off.
(2)  Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait for 1 min or more. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION [(E)].)

2.  Perform the following procedure. (with Mazda M Hybrid, with seat warmer system)

(1)  Verify if the ground plate needs to be disconnected and if it does, disconnect it. (See GROUND PLATE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION.)

3.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Front seat (See FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(2)  Front seat back trim and pad (See FRONT SEAT BACK TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(3)  Side air bag module (See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)

4.  Install the nuts.

5.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

6.  Disconnect the connector.

7.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the side air bag module.

Warning
•  If the air bag module is not securely fastened to the tire, the tire may fall due to impact and cause injury during activation (deployment). The air bag module is securely fixed to the tire with the pad facing the center of the tire.

8.  With the pad surface of side air bag module facing the center of the tire, wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) four times to secure it.

9.  Place two tires without wheels on top of each other, place a tire with the side air bag module fixed, place another tire without a wheel on top of it, and place another tire with a wheel on top.

10.  Secure the tire with the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more).

11.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the tires.

12.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

13.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Curtain Air Bag Module

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Front map light (See FRONT MAP LIGHT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(2)  Sunvisor (See SUNVISOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Assist handle (See ASSIST HANDLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  A-pillar trim (See A-PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(5)  Front seat belt lower anchor (See FRONT SEAT BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(6)  B-pillar upper trim (See B-PILLAR UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(7)  Trunk side upper trim (See TRUNK SIDE UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(8)  C-pillar trim (See C-PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(9)  Selector lever knob (ATX) (See SELECTOR LEVER COMPONENT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(10)  Shift lever knob (MTX) (See SHIFT LEVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [C66M-R, C66MX-R].)

(23)  Rear console bracket No.1 (See REAR CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(24)  Headliner (See HEADLINER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

2.  Remove the curtain air bag module. (See CURTAIN AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [STANDARD DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM].)

Warning
•  Be careful not to crush the pipe on the cut surface of the curtain air bag module. If it is crushed, the interior pressure of the pipe will build up and can cause it to explode during air bag module operation (deployment).

3.  Cut off the air bag part of the curtain air bag module at the position shown in the figure.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the curtain air bag module.

Warning
•  If the air bag module is not securely fastened to the tire, the tire may fall due to impact and cause injury during activation (deployment). To prevent this, securely fix the air bag module to the tire.

5.  Place the curtain air bag on the inside of the tire and wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) four times to secure it.

6.  Place two tires without wheels on top of each other, place a tire with the curtain air bag module fixed, place another tire without a wheel on top of it, and place another tire with a wheel on top.

7.  Secure the tire with the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more).

9.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

10.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Warning
•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.

Front pre-tensioner seat belt

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  B-pillar upper trim (See B-PILLAR UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(2)  Front scuff plate (See FRONT SCUFF PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Rear scuff plate (See REAR SCUFF PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  B-pillar lower trim (See B-PILLAR LOWER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(5)  Front seat belt (See FRONT SEAT BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the front pre-tensioner seat belt.

Warning
•  If the front pre-tensioner seat belt is not securely fixed to the tire, the tire may fall due to impact and cause injury during activation (deployment). The front pre-tensioner seat belt securely fixes the pre-tensioner mechanism to the tire with the pre-tensioner mechanism part inserted in the tire.

3.  With the pre-tensioner mechanism inside the tire, wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) four times to secure it.

4.  Place two tires without wheels on top of each other, place a tire with the front pre-tensioner seat belt fixed, place another tire without a wheel on top of it, and place another tire with a wheel on top.

5.  Secure the tire with the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more).

•  If the front pre-tensioner seat belt is not properly installed to the tire, serious injury may occur when the pre-tensioner part is operated (deployed). When installing the front pre-tensioner seat belt to the tire, verify that the pre-tensioner part is inside the tire.

Rear pre-tensioner seat belt

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Rear package tray (See REAR PACKAGE TRAY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(2)  Trunk covering (See TRUNK COVERING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Trunk board (See TRUNK BOARD REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(4)  Trunk end trim (See TRUNK END TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(5)  Trunk side upper trim (See TRUNK SIDE UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(6)  C-pillar trim (See C-PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(7)  Rear seat cushion (See REAR SEAT CUSHION REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Pull away the trunk side trim enough to secure a space for a hand to be inserted between body panel and trunk side trim. (See TRUNK SIDE TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

3.  Remove the parking assist unit (ultrasonic) (rear seat belt (RH) (with parking assist unit (ultrasonic)). (See PARKING ASSIST UNIT (ULTRASONIC) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

4.  Remove the rear seat belt. (See REAR SEAT BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

5.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the rear pre-tensioner seat belt.
